1961 Music Thursdays: Please Mr. Postman by the Marvelettes

Please Mr. Postman was the debut single for the Marvelettes, and was also the first Motown release to make it to number one on the Billboard chart. The song became a number one hit again in 1975 for the Carpenters when they performed their cover version.

The Carpenters’ official video was filmed right here in Anaheim at Disneyland!

1961 Music Thursdays: The Lion Sleeps Tonight by The Tokens

This old favorite by the Tokens was a cover of a South African song from the 1930s. It had been recorded many times before them, but the Tokens’ version made it to Number 1 in 1961. Enjoy!

1961 Music Thursdays: Patsy Cline’s “Crazy”

Patsy Cline originally didn’t want to record “Crazy,” which was written by Willie Nelson, because she thought it was too difficult to sing. The first recording session was apparently stressful and didn’t yield a great version of the song.

Luckily, she went back in to the studio again and out came the version we all know and love.

The song was a crossover Country and Pop hit in 1961 and is considered her signature song.
