OC Blogger Bash: What A Fantastic Party!

The OC Blogger Bash was an amazing event! There were hundreds of Southern California Bloggers in attendance (most of whom had donned period costumes), a rockin’ band played great music, the bartenders poured signature Orange Martini cocktails, waiters served up delicious appetizers, there were food stations to feed even the pickiest eater, Classic Cars were set up near a screen showing movies from 1961 as if it were an old-fashioned drive-in, there was a photo booth set up for instant fun, and to top it all off, a staggering list of prizes (nearly $60,000 worth) were given away during the course of the evening!

Thanks to Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau for hosting a thoroughly enjoyable party, and to All The Generous Sponsors for donating such wonderful prizes!

1961 Music Thursdays: Please Mr. Postman by the Marvelettes

Please Mr. Postman was the debut single for the Marvelettes, and was also the first Motown release to make it to number one on the Billboard chart. The song became a number one hit again in 1975 for the Carpenters when they performed their cover version.

The Carpenters’ official video was filmed right here in Anaheim at Disneyland!

1961 News Wednesdays: Peace Corps Established

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy issued an Executive Order establishing the Peace Corps,

To promote world peace and friendship through a Peace Corps, which shall make available to interested countries and areas men and women of the United States qualified for service abroad and willing to serve, under conditions of hardship if necessary, to help the peoples of such countries and areas in meeting their needs for trained manpower.

Kennedy saw the Peace Corps as an antidote to the “Ugly American” stereotype around the world and intended it as a way to ask all Americans to serve their country, each in their own way. Kennedy’s Brother-in-Law, Sergeant Shriver, was appointed to run it. Over 200,000 people have served in the Peace Corps since it began.

1961 Fashion Tuesdays: Menswear

Here is Sean Connery in Dr. No, which technically came out in 1962, but was shot in 1961. Nothing said fashionable gentleman in the 60’s like James Bond/Sean Connery. Here you see him in his Picking Up Girls At The Beach Ensemble. I think we all know the Tuxedo look. What else could a guy need to know about clothes in 1961?
